About Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is a city in sunny southern Croatia that overlooks the turquoise Adriatic Sea. Its waterfront location, limestone buildings and baroque churches are encircled by huge stone walls that mark its boundaries, making for a cityscape that’s quite unlike any other. Game of Thrones fans will recognise this as King’s Landing – it’s where many scenes from the iconic show were shot!
We’ve got superbly rated hostels in Dubrovnik to suit every type of traveller, with free Wi-Fi, often free breakfast and a mixture of dorms, privates and apartments. Solo travellers love the social vibes in our Dubrovnik hostels, especially ones with amazing facilities like a sunny rooftop terrace, on-site bar and nightly guest events. The most famous place to stay in Dubrovnik is of course its UNESCO listed Old City, with its gorgeous cobbled streets, baroque architecture and unique cafes. This is the priciest part of the city but, with postcard-perfect scenes on every corner, we think it’s worth every penny. Pile is a seafront neighbourhood just outside the Old City walls that’s buzzing with local restaurants that are much more budget-friendly, plus it has access to the beach – win win! Gruz, the neighbourhood surrounding the harbour, has a more authentic and local vibe thanks to its traditional shops and the largest farmer’s market in the city.
When comprising your Dubrovnik itinerary, you should always start in the Old City. This area feels like a movie set (because, it is), and you could spend hours just wandering round and getting lost in its historic streets. Next, visit the city’s many important landmarks, such as the Lovrijenac Fort that overlooks the sea from 40 metres high, the gothic Franciscan Monastery and the magnificent Sponza Palace. After all this sightseeing, head to the beach and relax with some sunbathing and local beer – you will have earned it!
Dubrovnik is a beautifully pedestrianised city – there are no trains, trams or metros – and it’s best enjoyed on foot in order to appreciate its beauty. With that said, there are some bus routes that cover the Old City and beyond if you happen to need them. Dubrovnik Airport is located 15km from the city centre, and the best way to arrange a transfer is at the dedicated pre-paid taxi desk, or from your hostel if travelling in the opposite direction.
